'Qntal' History:
BioThe band name QNTAL is a fantasy word that appeared to vocalist Syrah in her sleep, but the group’s music could equally have been conceived in a dream. Light and floating, well-thought-out and at the same time free. Powerful compositions that emanate an overwhelming charisma with their infectious dramatics. Sonic images that reflect past, present and future. A fascinating, unique atmosphere that invites listeners to dream along, including them in the world of QNTAL. QNTAL’s music and vocals form a harmonic, self-contained whole. Anthemnic, almost mythical tones fascinate the listener, who is only too happy to acquiesce to these living sounds. Despite all that harmony and lightness, QNTAL create their own individual sonic world full of contrasts that mesh harmonically with each other in their own way, each complementing the other. The result seems like a big jigsaw puzzle spread out in front of you, all confusing colours and shapes at first, coming together piece by piece to form a coherent picture – while a new image of unexpected colour and beauty appears every time you go to the trouble again. The individual pieces of that puzzle consist of classical music or spherical computer sounds, electronic beats, historical lyrics, classical vocals or medieval instruments – elements from different eras, regions and musical styles that melt together to form something new and totally individual. Parts that could hardly be more different from each other in shape and colour, but – put together – form a unit of beauty, clarity and wildly romantic power. The fantastic element in QNTAL’s music seems to be present at all times, despite the clarity in the compositions and the approach of these excellent musicians – but they are by no means incompatible. QNTAL are no lunatics lost in reverie, but competent and rational characters, experienced and proficient musicians who play music together in a considered and technically perfect way, without ever losing their passion. Michael Popp and founder member Ernst Horn were at home in the world of classical music, working at the theatre while simultaneously becoming a pop phenomenon on the "black music scene" with DEINE LAKAIEN, inspiring fans beyond the rigid borders of musical scenes and genres. These two sound magicians have found their perfect complement in Syrah, a.k.a. Sigrid Hausen, one of Germany’s leading medieval music vocalists. Together with Michael Popp, she also masterminds the medieval act, ESTAMPIE, who has successfully played international festivals for almost 20 years and has composed theatre music and released numerous CDs under this moniker. With her clear, sensual, classically trained voice, Syrah adds to the musical ideas of her collaborators that unmistakable soul and fascination that is QNTAL. Their melange of musical expertise and craftsmanship, fantasy and reason, and their open approach to fusing musical styles allow something new to emerge. As eccentric as the idea that QNTAL is based on may seem – mixing medieval lyrics, historic instruments with computer beats and a classical voice –, as convincing were the positive audience reactions from the beginning. After they had rid themselves of their original concept of working exclusively as a studio project, they played their first shows on a double billing with DEINE LAKAIEN. These live appearances met with enthusiastic reactions, earned them a continuously growing fan community and have become an integral part of QNTAL. The idea has continued to gain quality and character for over a decade. A side project, a studio project has turned into a contemporary band that brings unmistakably fresh impulses, last but not least thanks to the addition of Berlin keyboarder, composer and producer Philipp Groth. Their courage was rewarded when the album, QNTAL III, made no. 2 in Germanny’s alternative annual charts in 2003. Even more contemporary, more extreme the mix, even more comprehensive is the vision on their new album release, IV. These are musicians who refuse to limit themselves and have to pave their own way to reach the goals they’ve set for themselves. |
