'Michel Sanchez' History:

About

On July 1, 1957, half of Deep Forest was born. In Somain, a small village in northern France, Michel Sanchez was raised around the town's important coal mines. At age 4, he took his first steps toward his future music career. He was taught to play the accordion by Mr. D'Alberto. It was this man who instilled in Michel a love and appreciation for jazz music, which he still values. Studying the lithurgic organ, piano, and percussion, Michel entered the Douai Academy at age 15. At 20, he studied with Rolande Falcinelli in the higher academy of Paris. He also studied Messiaen, Jean Guilloux, Marcel Dupré, Ravel, and Henri Dutilleux. It was here that he first became interested in traditional ethnic music. He fell in love with the varied sounds and textures of the music, and became interested in mixing the different cultures. In 1980, Michel returned to northern France to begin working in recording studios. He devoted himself to electronica, finding it more rich-sounding than the pipe organ which he was acquainted with. He sought to create a musical sound inspired by such legends of jazz as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Jan Hammer. Then, the early nineteen nineties, Michel met future professional partner, Eric Mouquet. Together, they created Deep Forest, which adopted many of Michel's musical philosophies. It combined the cultural identities of many ethnic groups, and made them accessible to the Western ear. Today, Michel still lives in northern France, about 30 km from Eric's home.
