Matilda was born on the 8th October 1989 in Paris. When she was about nine years old she started to play her father’s guitars in secret, on discovering this her father decided to buy her a Burns Marquee Club Series guitar and a ‘teach-yourself’ instruction book.
Watching the rapid progress she made he decided she should join the The Friends of Cliff Richard & The Shadows Fan Club because she loved the sound of this legendary group above all others, especially the guitar playing of Hank Marvin.
On the eve of her eleventh birthday some of the Shadows were at the Cultural Centre in the town of Chelles (77) for a private concert. A young English guitarist was due to play but cancelled unexpectedly. At a moments notice, encouraged by 400 fans, Matilda took up the challenge to ‘fill in’ and was literally pushed onto stage by Jet Harris and Bruce Welch, the bass and rhythm guitarists of the Shadows.
She played Simon & Garfunkels famous standard ‘Bright Eyes’, which had been re-written as a guitar instrumental. As she left the stage she was immediately offered the chance to record her own CD. Matilda practised intensively and went on to record her first CD ‘Matilda, Little Shadow’ paying homage to her favourite band.
At the request of the Fan Club des Shadows France, Matilda opened the show at Bobino during a private concert in 2001. She was accompanied on this occasion by one of the best current Norwegian groups, The Reflections.
After launching her first small CD, produced by Magic Records (MAM Productions) and published by Universal, a small tour took the young Matilda from Oslo to Barcelona, via Newcastle-upon-Tyne and London.
The following year with requests from a growing Fan Club, which is quite surprising considering the average age of fans for this type of music, Matilda returned to the Studio and recorded a second CD ‘Angel of the North’, which paid homage to the town of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The title track was recorded by Matilda in Paris, whilst Guitar George, a 13 year old British boy recorded the counterpart in Norwich for this guitar duo.
This CD will be exported worldwide including Norway, Denmark and Sweden and even Japan under the Magic label published by Universal. It was at this time that Matilda abandoned the Burns Marquee for a Fender Stratocaster Bluburst, from which she cannot be separated.
Chris Kinman, a famous Australian guitar electronics engineer has designed a simple triple pickup for guitar, especially for Matilda, this pickup kit is available under the name Crystal Matilda and gives the young guitarist an enormous flexibility of sounds.
At the beginning of 2003 a third project took shape. Unfortunately problems delayed the launch of this album but the trust between Record Company and Matilda has not been shaken, it is now a case of total teamwork.
At that time she was invited to perform on a cruise liner, sailing between Los Angeles and Baja in Mexico. An unfortunate hitch forced her to cancel these dates, which was a great pity as she would have worked along side Los Straitjackets and The Ventures.
In the Spring of 2003, whilst taking part at a ‘Shadows’ convention at the Palais des Congres in Versailles, Matilda and Guitar George played their famous duo in front of an enthusiastic public who rewarded them with a standing ovation.
At the end of the show Matilda was approached by several ‘so-called’ managers, who, unfortunately, failed to take things further; except for Warren Bennett, the son of Brian Bennett, the Shadows drummer, (to whom she has dedicated her CD). Warren asked her to record a Shadows style album with active participation from the famous English band – and why not?
The project has taken time to take shape, involving sponsorship negotiations and many trips back and forth to England. Matilda is totally committed to this opportunity and hopes to make her name in the history of instrumental music.
During the first four years of her musical career articles about Matilda appeared in many specialist musical journals in France, England, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Japan, USA and Australia. She also made many radio broadcasts on SUD Radio in Toulouse, and over a two-year period had a regular Saturday morning spot called Christofollie. She was heard in Brittany, thanks to Celtic FM and in Nord Pas de Calais thanks to Radio 6. Recently Soleil FM in Avignon has shown a keen interest in the young guitarist. Television appearances and publicity spots are also being negotiated..
In October 2003, Matilda had a meeting with Warren Bennett, who was now the artistic director of the project, which had originally been proposed in Versailles. This meeting highlighted the interest of the group for Matilda, and she was encouraged to practice in order to achieve a professional standard. Lets remember that Matilda is a student of the famous jazz guitarist MARIE-ANGE MARTIN.
In May 2004, during their final ‘goodbye’ tour of England, the Shadows invited Matilda to their Cardiff concert. On that day in a nearby pub she met Warren Bennett and Ben Marvin (the son of the famous bespectacled soloist) who was to be the second guitarist on the album. The current Shadows bass player, Mark Griffith, was also present and agreed to contribute to the album. The contract was due to be finalised in London by August 2004
Now Matilda started to work on the new titles, which had been arranged for guitar. Pierre Theodori from Toulouse, having already composed for the Shadows was asked to write two numbers for the CD. Matilda will interpret these numbers with youthful enthusiasm and her great sounding Stratocaster. At the annual Guitar Jazz Manouche Festival in Samois, Matilda was thrilled to meet her idol, Hank Marvin, who congratulated her on her second album ‘Angel of the North’.
