'Maps' History:
BioMaps is the brainchild of British impresario James Chapman, a musical mad scientist responsible for a meticulous and explorative full-length debut. Refined by Sigur Rós engineer Ken Thomas and Björk producer Valgeir Sigurdsson, We Can Create was created as an escape to transcend beyond Chapman's bleak and uninspiring Northampton neighborhood -- and hopefully the LP can have the same effect on a new legion of listeners in the States. We Can Create, available now via Mute, is a triumph with a futuristic twist, sans robots and apocalyptic disaster. Chapman has produced an ambient collection that's innovative and forward, but also likely to join the legion of atmospheric achievement already established by Air, Sigur Rós, and The Sea and Cake. Its the sounds of coming down after a boisterous metropolitan night -- much like a makeover to My Bloody Valentine's Loveless with a splatter of Norwegian synth and Flaming Lips psychedelic sensitivity. Believe it or not -- all of the electronic elegance recorded for We Can Create was composed without a computer. Instead, every line was manually layered onto a 16-track recorder in the sunrise-laden privacy of Chapman's bedroom prior to production much later on. |
