Luna Sea was a very popular rock band in Japan that was formed in 1989. They were also a Visual Kei band. The band consisted of Ryuichi Kawamura on vocals, Inoran and J on guitars, and Shinya on drums. They were originally known as Lunacy before they were signed by the very famous X Japan leader and owner of Extasy Records, Yoshiki Hayashi, in 1990. The then-known Lunacy, were discovered by X Japan’s lead guitarist, the late hide Matsumoto, in a club. A year after they were signed under the recording company, the band recorded and released their debut full length self-titled album, Luna Sea.
Bu in their early years, Luna Sea was always considered second to the grandfathers of rock and Visual Kei, X Japan. Their success was overwhelming over the years but they still could not match up to X Japan’s. After numerous chart topping singles and albums, the members of Luna Sea decided that it was time for them to go separate ways. Their The Final Act two days concert held from December 26, 2000, at Tokyo Dome was a sell-out.
Members have pursued their own solo careers. Ryuichi started an acting career and at the same time, he has become a pop icon. Sugizo had toned down his image and with Ryuichi and Yuna from Lazy Knack, they formed The FLARE. Inoran and Ken Lloyd from Oblivion Dust formed the famous rock band, FAKE. J had released a few albums for his solo career. Shinya wedded Aya Ishiguro from Morning Musume and have started a family.
Late 2007, Luna Sea announced that they would perform a one night only Christmas Eve concert at the Tokyo Dome. It will be their first live performance after seven years of being disbanded.
