'Clannad' History:
ClannadDonegal band Clannad took their name from 'an Clann as Dobhar' meaning 'the family from the townland of Dobhair'. They made music for over 30 years, bringing fame to their native Gweedore and leading the way onto the world stage for other Donegal traditional groups such as Altan. Clannad was made up of sister and brother Máire (Vocals, Harp, Keyboards) and Ciaran Brennan (Vocals, Double Bass, Electric Bass, Guitar, Piano) together with their uncles, brothers Noel (Guitar) and Padraig Duggan (Mandolin, Harmonica, Acoustic Guitar). Two other members of the Brennan family have played with Clannad - Pól (Tin Whistles, Flute, Vocals) between 1970-1989 and Enya (Keyboards, Harmony Vocals, Lead Vocals) between 1980-1982. Clannad rose to fame in the 1970's with six albums which might be deemed 'purist' in tone, the first of which, entitled *Clannad*, was released in 1973. The group toured widely in the following years and in 1976 they became full-time musicians. In 1982 Clannad wrote and performed *Theme from Harry's Game* for a popular television series of the same name which sold over a million copies and earned the band two BAFTA awards. Clannad went on to write the music for *Robin of Sherwood* (1984) for which they received another BAFTA. In 1992 Clannad's album *Anam* was released and the band won the Billboard Music Award for 'World Music Song Of The Year.' Clannad's Grammy-nominated album *Banba* (1993) took them to No.1 in the British World Music charts and their movie score *The Love Theme From Last Of The Mohicans* was popular throughout the world. In 1998 Clannad's *Landmark* CD made them acknowledged leaders in World music. Clannad recorded over 15 albums and, while critics maintain that Clannad make 'World' rather than traditional Irish music, the influence of their native Donegal is omnipresent in the haunting voice of Máire Brennan and in their work as a whole. source: http://www.dun-na-ngall.com/clannad.html |
