About 20 years ago now, in December 1984, Band Aid’s "Do They Know It’s Christmas?"
was released, which was one of the most relevant charity music campaigns in
history of Pop music. The project was started by Bomtown Rat’s Bob Geldof to
raise money for child starvation in Ethipoia. The song reached # 1 in the UK
and US charts and sold 50 million copies. It was written by Bob Geldof and produced
by Ultravox’ Midge Ure and Trevor Horn (The Buggles, Yes, Art of Noise). Performers
included David Bowie, Eurythmics, Human League, Ultravox, Bananarama, Bob Geldof,
Culture Club, Duran Duran, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Heaven 17, Kool and the
Gang, Paul McCartney, Sting, Paul Young, Phil Collins, Spandau Ballet, Paul
Weller, The Style Council, U2, and Wham!.
This year the Band Aid 20 has topped the UK charts under the leadership of Midge
Ure and Bob Geldof.
